Natured Inspired

This unique modern home is hidden in a picturesque forest near the seacoast. The owners wished for a fun, fresh, contemporary kitchen that would bring in the natural elements outside while keeping the simple clean lines found in modern design. They also wanted to keep the space light and airy.d to keep the space light and airy.

The key was to incorporate organic shapes and textures into the streamline kitchen design. The cabinetry selected is a simple door style with small framing detail. Rift cut white oak with a white stain allows the wood’s texture to show through on the cabinetry while giving it a pale driftwood feel. This is paired with a darker warm gray stain on the island for contrast. The natural quartzite countertops and backsplash add graceful organic movement. Lighting by Hubbardton Forge and a local NH artist, Derek Marshall, become pieces of art that add whimsy and soften the space with the use of curved shapes.

The room boasts high ceilings and lots of natural light. We opened up the space by creating a knee wall that allows the light to flow into the adjacent living room. This is a great spot for the beverage bar and for entertaining. A utility closet was relocated to provide space for a pantry with roll out trays and tall cabinetry with a roll out bin for dog food storage. One of the room’s best features is a rounded eating nook surrounded by windows. Here the custom wood table top matches the island and the circular bench seating makes this the perfect place for the family to gather and eat or play games.
