Mermaid Cottage Kitchen

Unique, fun, whimsical, and cozy are just a few words that could be used to describe this colorful kitchen! Located near the beach, this small antique cottage is home to an artist that loves color and nature. The quaint cottage was in need of a kitchen remodel that would make the space more functional and also solve some storage issues that were a problem in this small space. The owner also wanted the small room to feel more open and inviting.

We opened up the room by taking down part of the wall between the kitchen and dining room. There was an awkward angled utility closet that we removed. The utilities were then hidden in a tall pantry cabinet and the washer and dryer were also moved into a tall cabinet. We were able to use part of the side porch to create a mudroom area, freeing up the space that was previously used to enter the kitchen. Taking out that door enabled us to lengthen the run of cabinetry on the sink wall. Now the range and refrigerator could be moved to that side of the room. At the opposite side of the room there is a place for a coffee and tea making.  A small island with an attached seating area was added.

Customized materials were a must create a special kitchen that would fit in with rest of this eclectic home! We also needed to keep the rustic ceiling and other architectural elements that were keeping with the bungalow style cottage. Custom oak cabinetry, some with light sea-green stain, add a driftwood like texture to the space.  The oak island also features a custom stain in a bright salmon tone. Dekton countertops were chosen for their durability and likeness to oiled soapstone. The country-style utility sink adds charm. The homeowner found uniquely made hardware, lighting and reclaimed turned post at the island to add a personal and whimsical touch.
