FARMHOUSE IN THE CITY - OUR UNIQUE KITCHEN DESIGN

This spacious kitchen was once awkward and dated but we gave it a bright and sophisticated make-over! The homeowners are a young family with three children living an energetic and fun-loving lifestyle. They wished for a space with clean lines that reflected their personal style and fit in with their vision of a modern farmhouse, the style in which they have remodeled their home to reflect.

Some of the architectural details that made the space interesting were also design challenges, like  dramatic ceiling angels, multiple ceiling heights and large skylights. There was an odd tile ledge at the ceiling transition. Dated tile, an oversized island hood, and many doors made the space visually overwhelming.

The clients love shiplap and it’s horizontal lines offset the angles above. It’s used at the hood and island to add a “farmhouse” element. A rustic wooden beam replaced the tile ledge, adding character and texture. The old window was replaced with a black window, adding some drama. The floor tile was replaced with rustic oak that can also be found on the custom hood and floating shelves. The hood was designed to hang higher as the client, who is 6’2”, frequently hit his head on the old one. We also granted the client’s wish for a tea bar and a pantry cabinet that her young children could use for snack storage.

A mix of white and dark gray cabinets stay on trend and allow the gold toned hardware to stand out. The countertop and back splash are a quartz material with lots of organic movement; It creates contrast to the strong angles and vertical shiplap. The final touches include a stunning beaded chandelier above the island and a classic farm sink. This kitchen is now the perfect balance in comfort and sophistication.
