A RETRO COTTAGE - OUR UNIQUE KITCHEN DESIGN
Retro Cottage
All the quaint charm of yesteryear with the modern conveniences of today! This small kitchen in a traditional New England cape needed a major makeover. The homeowner wanted a kitchen with a cozy retro feel of the 1950s. You can almost smell grandma’s cookies in the oven!
We wanted to create a light, airy feel in the kitchen. We selected a pale color palate reminiscent of the 1950s. The highlight of the kitchen is the mint green Smeg refrigerator. It sets the retro mood in the space with its throwback style and color. Its small scale made it the perfect choice in this kitchen. The peninsula cabinetry is a soft buttery yellow while the other base cabinets are a light cherry with a white glaze. The white wall cabinets have glass insert doors to show off colorful dishes inside. Soap stone countertops give soft green undertones. A subway tiled wall with wooden shelves creates additional charm and provides great open storage.
We opened up the space by taking down a wall to the living room and to the hallway. This greatly improved traffic flow and allowed more space for seating at the peninsula. A downdraft was used at the range to prevent a hood from obstructing the visual space. An 18” dishwasher was selected to save space and paneled to keep with the look of yesterday. This small kitchen is big on comfort and retro cottage style!
This retro cottage kitchen blends 1950s charm with modern functionality. Featuring a mint green Smeg refrigerator, soft colors, subway tile, and soapstone countertops, the space exudes cozy retro vibes while offering practicality and openness.
