A COLORFUL CLASSIC - OUR UNIQUE KITCHEN DESIGN
Colorful Classic Colonial
This classic New England colonial style home was in need of a multi-room makeover. This included the kitchen, sunroom, laundry room, pantry, office bar, dining room, entry, powder room and living room. The home owner wanted the space to have good traffic flow and function well when he works from home. He wanted the look to be classy and tailored but with punches of color and pattern for fun. This is also a home in which he entertains guests and wanted them to feel welcome.
We began by opening up the current pantry, creating a way to walk through it and the small office into the dining room. This created a circle, so the owner had better access to all spaces. The pervious kitchen felt crowded with the range, dishwasher, and sink lined up. We created a cooking zone using the sink on the island as a prep area opposite the range. We then relocated the larger sink and dishwasher to the clean-up zone on another wall. There is also a third work area or baking zone with second oven, microwave and more countertop space. The large walk through pantry allows you to easily access items with open shelves and open roll-out drawers as well as closed storage. The new office area has a small built in beverage center with refrigeration. It is a great place to store extra drinks as it is just off of the remodeled dining room. A full wet bar was then added in the living room for entertaining. The living room also had an awkward fireplace that was remodeled to allow more space in the room and bookcases were added for storage and interest. The laundry room doubles as a mudroom. Stacking the washer and dryer allow room for cubbies and a bench to be added.
The custom cabinetry used throughout this project included a mix of quarter sawn oak and painted pieces. While most of the painted cabinetry is neutral, a pop of teal blue was added to the cabinetry next to the range to welcome some color into the space. The quartzite countertops have stunning natural movement. The natural stone tile used in the kitchen and pantry elevate the vibe. The pervious floor was a patch-work quilt like puzzle of different materials. We selected new lighter toned wood flooring that could be used throughout most of the space. A herringbone tile was used for durability in the laundry and sunroom as it is just off the swimming pool deck. We continued with the surprise pops of color throughout, including reusing the teal paint on trim in the office and on the barn door added in the dining room. Blue tile is used in the laundry room and pops of pink in the sunroom. In the living room the home owner chose to punch up both color and pattern by using fabrics that filled the space with excitement and whimsy.
